They are non-cancerous growths that occur in the sinuses or nasal mucosa (lining of the nose). They are sac-like, soft, and painless. They generally start at the top of the inside of the nose (the ethmoid sinuses) and grow or hang into the open areas below. Larger polyps may obstruct the nasal airway or sinuses. Polyps occur more often in adults than children.
Unless you also have a sinus infection, sinus pain, facial pain, headaches and migraines are not often experienced with nasal polyps.
Allergy immunotherapy or allergy medication may be recommended to reduce an allergic response that may have caused polyps to form. Nasal steroid sprays may help with a runny nose or nasal obstruction, but symptoms will likely come back once you stop using the spray. To remove nasal polyps and allow for easier breathing, some patients may require a surgery called Polypectomy. For others, surgical opening of the ethmoidal and maxillary sinuses may be needed to remove unhealthy tissue.
